　Neuropsychiatric inventory（NPI）は，1994年にCummingsら^1）によって開発された認知症者における精神神経症状の代表的な評価指標であり，信頼性と妥当性が検証され，精神疾患やパーキンソン病などのほかの神経疾患者における精神神経症状の評価にも用いられている．

　原典のNPI^1）は，患者または被介護者の主介護者に対してインタビュー形式にて実施される評価で，認知症者に認められやすい10項目（妄想，幻覚，興奮，うつ，不安，多幸，無為，脱抑制，易刺激性，異常行動）の精神神経症状の設問によって構成される．設問10項目に睡眠異常と食行動異常の設問2項目を加えた合計12項目版のNPI^2）も報告され，目的に応じて使い分けられているが，より一貫性のある結果とより一義的な解釈を得るために10項目版のNPIの使用を推奨している報告もある^3）．
