学生時代,小児施設での臨床実習が決まったとき,親とどのように接したらよいか不安に思った経験はないだろうか.一方,小児施設で臨床をしている理学療法士は,親とのかかわり方をどのように身につけているのだろうか.卒前卒後を通して,理学療法教育として家族とのかかわりを学ぶ機会は限られている.先輩からの助言や個人の学習努力,または積み重ねた経験に基づいて臨床実践されているのが現状である.
家族が子供の発達に大きな影響を与えることは疑いの余地がない.したがって子供の発達を支える小児理学療法では,根拠を持って家族とかかわる必要がある.そこで本稿では,Family-Centered Servicesの言葉の意味や概念,定義,効果をレビューする.そして家族を中心として理学療法を実践するうえで特に重要な情報提供のありかたを,私見を交えて述べる.小児理学療法の臨床・教育において,科学的根拠を持って家族とかかわるきっかけになることが本稿の目的である.
