Pusherの発見

　Daviesは『Steps to Follow』（初版）^1）の第14章で，「体軸のずれ（押す人症候群，pusher syndrome）」について「……これらの障害は一定のかたちをとり，症候群としてまとめることができる．押す人症候群（pusher syndrome）と呼ばれ，……患者はすべての姿勢で健側に力を入れ，患側のほうに強く押す．そして姿勢を他動的に矯正，つまり体重を健側方向もしくは，体の正中軸を越えて健側に移動しようとすると強く抵抗する」と記述した．ここではこの臨床徴候が「症候群」であること，患側方向へ「押す」こと，そして矯正に対して「抵抗する」ことが特性であるという重要な指摘を初めて行ったのである．その後，同書の改訂2版^2）では，この章に「Pusher症候群の素因」という興味深い項が加筆され，固有受容覚，迷路系入力情報の混乱などを背景として，四肢体幹の筋緊張を変化させることがこの徴候の発現に関与している可能性について述べている．

　これに先立ちBrunnstrom^3）は，片麻痺症例において患側（麻痺側）に姿勢が傾斜する現象をlisting phenomenonとして報告していたが，このことは片麻痺が重度であれば通常起こり得るものであり，積極的に押すこと，矯正に対して抵抗することについての記載はなくpusher現象を記述していたとは言えない．後述するように「症候群」であるかについては議論の余地があるが，「積極的に押す」，「矯正に抵抗する」というpusherの本質的側面を記述した点でDaviesの功績は大きいと言えよう．
