がんサバイバー

がんサバイバーおよびサバイバーシップとは？

　がんサバイバーという概念は，Mullan F^1）が1985年に発表した「Seasons of survival（生存の季節）」と題する論文のなかで初めて用いられた．“サバイバー”というと，治療を終えてがんを克服できた人のような印象を受けるが，それだけでなく，一度でもがんと診断されれば，原因が何であれ亡くなるまでの間，その人は“がんサバイバー”である^2）．この背景には，医療技術の進歩により長期生存が可能になってきたことが挙げられる．

　その一方でがんサバイバーは，身体的，精神的，社会的，および経済的問題といったさまざまな面で生涯にわたって困難に直面することになる．そのためにサバイバー本人だけでなく周囲の関係者や環境を含めて，長く生きることだけではなく，よりよい人生を送れるように取り組むことが重要になり，それをサバイバーシップと呼ぶ．
