　Robert Bentley Todd（1809～1859）は，ロンドンのKing's Collegeの生理学の教授とKing's College Hospitalの内科医を歴任した。彼の名前が今日まで残っているのは，いわゆるToddの麻痺，すなわちてんかんの痙攣後に弛緩性麻痺が残ることを記載したことによる。

　それが最初に出るのは，1849年にロンドンのLumleian Lecturesでの講演である（Fig.1)^1）。「痙攣性疾患の病理と治療」と名付けた講演で，42頁のパンフレットの中で，第10頁に記載がある。「麻痺の状態はときによっては痙攣のあとも続く。これはとりわけ痙攣が一側あるいは一肢だけに生じたときにみられる。このとき，一肢あるいは一側の麻痺は数時間あるいは数日も，痙攣が終わってからも残る。しかしながら，結局は完全に回復する」。
