はじめに

　福原病はMERRF（myoclonus epilepsy associated with ragged-red fibers）といわれ，骨格筋のミトコンドリア異常を共通点とするミトコンドリア脳筋の代表的な疾患であり，筆者ら^1）が最初に報告したものであるが，新しい疾患として認められるまでには，多くの共同研究者の協力といくつかの幸運に恵まれた。この論文では，この疾患が確立されるまでの経緯について述べた後に，その疾患の臨床的，病理学的特徴について概説したい。
