はじめに
H.M.は，1953年27歳のときにてんかんの治療の目的で両側側頭葉内側部の切除を受けたが，術後極めて重篤な記憶障害が生じ，2008年12月に82歳で死亡するまでの55年間，多数の研究者による研究の対象となり，記憶の神経機構について多くのことが明らかにされた。
切除された部位には扁桃体や鉤も含まれていたが，それらの部位のみの切除の事例では記憶障害が起きなかった1)ことから，より後部の海馬，周嗅野，嗅内野，海馬傍回から成る内側側頭葉記憶システムの概念が確立された。そしてその機能としては，長期記憶と陳述記憶には関与しているが，短期記憶と非陳述記憶には関与していないことなどが次々に明らかにされていった。
たった1人の事例が学問の進歩に貢献したという点では，H.M.は他に類を見ない存在といえるが，その理由としては，極めて重度な記憶障害が知能や知覚機能の障害をほとんど伴わずに純粋なかたちで生じていること，症状が長期にわたって安定していること，H.M.も家族も研究には極めて協力的であったこと，H.M.の重要性が早くから認識されていち早く行き届いた研究体制が組まれたこと，などを挙げることができる。本稿では，そうした経緯の一端をみていくことにしたい。
