ギラン・バレー症候群は，急性単相性の多発性末梢神経障害であり，1916年のギラン，バレー，ストロールによる報告に基づきそのように呼ばれている。従来，脱髄疾患とされてきたが，1980年代以降軸索をプライマリーに障害するタイプも存在することがわかってきた。病態は自己免疫であり，特に糖脂質の糖鎖に対する抗体が高頻度にみられることが1980年代の末頃から報告されてきた。1980年代半ば以降，血漿浄化療法と経静脈的免疫グロブリン療法が有効な治療法として用いられているが，重症例・難治例は依然として存在し，今後の課題となっている。
