　ラングレイ（John Newport Langley；1852-1925）は，1852年11月10日にロンドンの西80kmにあるバークシャー州ニューベリーで生まれた。彼の父は私立学校で教えていたという。1871年の秋にケンブリッジ大学のセントジョンカレッジに入学した。ここで生理学教授のマイケル・フォスター（Michael Foster；1836-1907）に出会ったことが彼の運命を決めることになる。フォスターの影響で医学・生理学を志した学生は，ラングレイのほかにもシェリントン（Charles Scott Sherrington；1857-1952）やガスケル（Walter Holbrook Gaskell；1847-1914）など多数いる。フォスターは英国の生理学会の設立者であり『Journal of Physiology（ロンドン）』誌の創刊者でもあった。フォスターの教え方は，科学の諸問題に学生の興味を湧き起こし，そして，この問題を解き明かすことほど楽しい人生はないということを示すものだった。

　1874年にケンブリッジ大学を卒業すると，フォスターの実地授業助手としてその後の9年間を過ごした。まだ学生ではあったが，フォスターの指導のもと，心臓に対するピロカルピンの影響について研究を始め，1875年に論文としてまとめた。1900年に教授に就任し，フォスターが英国議会に選出された後は1903年にその後任として指名された¹⁾。
