シルヴィウス裂の内奥に位置する島皮質(ブロードマン領野13,14,15,16野)は,知覚,言語,認知,感情,運動など,多様な精神機能に関連することが知られている。中でも,島皮質は身体の生理的状態を表象する内受容感覚がつくられる場所であり,それにより身体の状態を適切に制御し,ひいては多くの精神機能をも制御する機能が実現されている。近年,そうした島皮質の機能を説明する共通原理として,前部島における内的モデルによる予測の形成と,予測と感覚信号を比較し予測誤差を計算し,その予測誤差を最小化することで心身の統合的な適応を図ろうとするメカニズムが提唱されている。本論では,そうした島皮質の機能原理について記述するとともに,それが行動を選択する意思決定にも影響を与えている可能性について論考する。
