古典に記載された先人の経験則を考慮し品質の安定したエキス製剤を使用するとよい。片頭痛には五苓散，呉茱萸湯，当帰芍薬散，桂枝茯苓丸が頻用される。五苓散は慢性硬膜下血腫にも用いられる。認知症の行動・心理症状には抑肝散や桂枝加竜骨牡蛎湯が有用である。末梢神経障害に伴うしびれ・疼痛には附子の配合された桂枝加朮附湯，真武湯などを使用する。難治性吃逆には半夏瀉心湯を試みる。甘草による偽アルドステロン症などの副作用に注意する。
