レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチは万能の画家であるが，医学，特に脳の研究にも情熱を傾けた。脳室を詳細に研究し，魂の在り処を追求した。彼に関する病跡学では，鏡文字の使用や注意欠如多動症と考えられることが注目され，非凡な創造性と仕事を完遂できない性格に寄与した可能性が議論されている。彼の死因は脳卒中と考えられているが，晩年に絵画を描けなくなった右上肢麻痺の原因としては尺骨ないし正中神経麻痺が推測されている。
