　Murphy徴候は、「胆石症」「胆囊炎」の身体所見である（図1^1,2）・表1^3））。その名は、米国生まれの外科医John Benjamin Murphy（1857〜1916）に由来している。彼の外科医としての活躍は幅広く、連続して診療した300症例の内訳は一般外科55％、整形外科22％、婦人科10％、泌尿器科7％、脳神経外科5％、その他1％であった^4）。Murphyは、米・Mayo clinic創設者の1人であるWilliam James Mayo（1861〜1939）をして、「彼らの世代の天才外科医」と評されていた^4）。と同時に彼は、優れた「臨床教育者」でもあった。
