FE_Naは、腎前性/腎性急性腎障害（AKI）の鑑別に用いられているが、ルーチンに行うべき検査ではない。腎前性AKIの場合には、病因によって補液などの治療的介入・診断的治療を行えばよい。AKIの鑑別は、詳細な問診や身体所見が鍵である。
