1．はじめに

　白血球は主に生体防御を担う細胞群であり，最近では骨髄系・リンパ系とも細かく分類され，それぞれに特異的な機能の解析が進んでいる．その一方で，すべての白血球に共通に備わっている機能もある．「細胞遊走」はその代表例である．細胞遊走の進化上の歴史は古く，海綿などの二胚葉性動物で既に上皮細胞と内側の襟細胞と呼ばれる層の間にアメーバ状の細胞がみられることが報告されている．これら生体防御反応のほか，細胞の移動は，生殖・個体発生，分化，組織修復など，生命現象を支える重要な事象となっている．この稿では，白血球だけでなく，ほとんどすべての細胞種の基本的な機能である「細胞遊走」について，その測定方法と最新の知見を解説する．
