神経系の特徴は,形態的にも機能的にも異なる多種多様な細胞がお互いを認識することによって,正確な神経回路網が形成されていることにある.本シリーズで解説されているように,糖鎖は細胞同士や細胞と細胞外分子との相互認識や相互作用において重要な役割を果たす.また細胞の運命や感染の成立を決定するなど様々な生命現象にかかわり,臨床的にも非常に重要な分子である.さらに,近年ヒトの先天性疾患で糖鎖異常が原因になっているものが明らかになり,こうした疾患研究からも糖鎖の役割の解明が急速に進んでいる.本稿では神経系おける糖鎖研究および糖鎖関連疾患について概説する.
