　アスベスト曝露による悪性中皮腫の増加は社会的問題である．その症状として，体腔液貯留が高頻度に認められ，出現する中皮腫細胞の特徴と細胞マーカーの特性を理解することで，細胞診断が可能となる．このことにより，悪性中皮腫の早期病変がみつかり，効果的な治療選択と予後の改善が期待できる．その診断のためには，中皮腫が多彩な細胞所見を呈することを認識し，適切なマーカーの組合せによる細胞鑑別の有用性(抗体パネル)とその限界についても熟知する必要がある．
