23価肺炎球菌莢膜ポリサッカライドワクチン(PPV)は，成人に対して実用化されている細菌感染症予防のためのワクチンである．本邦における接種率は，65歳以上の高齢者の5％程度まで上昇しており，さらなる普及が必要な段階である．2010年春からは小児に適応のある多糖体―蛋白結合型ワクチン(PCV)も実用化され，年齢や世代に応じて総合的に肺炎球菌感染症に対してワクチン戦略を立てる時代になりつつある．
