はじめに

　肝性脳症は，急性肝不全や慢性肝疾患の終末像である肝硬変などの病態で起こりうる精神神経的な症状である．原因は，中枢神経での偽神経伝達物質作用やγ-アミノ酪酸（γ-aminobutyric acid：GABA）レセプターの活性化など多岐にわたるが，なかでも窒素代謝の過程で産生されるアンモニアの関与は大きい．
